In a dual mission of community support and religious fulfilment, the C-Quansah Foundation has distributed food items to over 150 elderly citizens across all 30 electoral areas of Cape Coast South and organized a free eye screening for residents.

Speaking in a telephone interview on GBC Radio Central’s ‘Wɔnfrɛ Yie’ show on Saturday, December 27, 2025, the Foundation’s Operations Officer, Alhaji Issah Jagbesie, explained that the initiative was lawyer Charles Quansah’s way of helping the elderly enjoy the festive season and addressing vision impairments in the community.

“We are providing these food items so that needy elderly people can also feel part of the yuletide season,” he said. He emphasised that the foundation relied on data from local Assembly Members to identify beneficiaries.

According to Alhaji Jagbesie, each beneficiary received a 5 kg bag of rice, a tin of tomatoes, a full crate of eggs, and one carton of bottled water. The goal, he noted, was to enable each recipient to prepare at least one nutritious meal to mark the Christmas season. “This is to make them feel included and part of the celebrations,” he stressed.

Regarding the health outreach, Alhaji Jagbesie disclosed that the C-Quansah Foundation, under the leadership of lawyer Charles Quansah and in collaboration with Rapha Eye Clinic, conducted free screenings at Nkwantado (the True Church of Christ) for all Cape Coast South residents with eye conditions.

“The eye is the window to the body, and we are providing comprehensive screening at no cost,” he clarified. “Anyone diagnosed with an ailment or requiring corrective lenses will receive complimentary medication and glasses.”

He revealed that a previous screening exercise at Ntsin served approximately 500 people, and they hoped to match or exceed that number this time. In addition to free screening, participants were also offered free snacks.

In his concluding remarks, the Operations Officer expressed the foundation’s gratitude to the Metropolitan Chief Executive for Cape Coast, Hon. George Justice Arthur; the MP for Cape Coast South, Hon. Ricketts Hagan; the foundation’s leadership; and party executives.

He specially commended lawyer Charles Kwesi Quansah for his philanthropic work through the foundation and encouraged him to continue his support for the people of Cape Coast.

ASP Ekow Francis Dadzie of the Ankaful Main Camp Prison has emphasized that prisons serve not only as facilities for detaining inmates but also as institutions dedicated to the reformation and rehabilitation of prisoners.

He underscored that “Think Prison 360 Degrees” is one initiative designed to change the negative perception and narrative surrounding the Prison Service.

Speaking on GBC Radio Central’s Morning Show on Thursday, December 18, 2025, ASP Dadzie remarked that the ‘Think Prison 360 Degrees’ initiative was hinged on self-sustaining rehabilitation hubs, anchored by core pillars like welfare (staff/inmates), agricultural mechanization, industrialisation, wealth creation, strategic partnerships, modernization, and rebranding for holistic reform, aiming for hope, healing, and national relevance through skills, productivity, and reintegration.

Regarding the farming activities undertaken by inmates, DSP Harriet Asiedu, also a panel member, disclosed that they are presently engaged in both animal and crop farming. In terms of animal farming, their activities encompass poultry, piggery, turkey, and rabbits, whereas crop farming involves oil palm, coconut, and maize.

Further highlighting their agricultural endeavors, DSP Dadzie noted that Main Camp Prisons presently operates a 36-acre oil palm farm, a 10-acre coconut farm, and a 15-acre maize farm, among others. He underscored that these farms are designated to support inmate feeding and provide vocational training. Notably, “We sell some of our products to the general public,” she said, adding, “The generated revenue is reinvested into the farms to ensure sustainability,” DSP Asiedu emphasised.

On negative perceptions surrounding the service, DSP Dadzie noted that they result from ignorance and misinformation. “Typically, when internal security agencies are mentioned, they reference the police, fire service, and others,” he added. “They do not usually mention our names, but in internal security, we rank after the police,” he clarified.

In his public appeal, he seized the opportunity to encourage the public to include their names whenever they reference the names of internal security services in Ghana.

Think Prisons 360 Degrees is a 2025 strategic reform initiative launched by the Ghana Prisons Service to modernise the country’s correctional system. Championed by the Director-General, Mrs Patience Baffoe-Bonnie (Esq), the programme aims to shift the focus from “warehousing” inmates to holistic reformation, rehabilitation, and national productivity.

The Central Regional Land Reclamation Committee has chalked up a significant victory in the ongoing fight against illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, by reclaiming 10 hectares of degraded land within six months and bringing an end to deadly drowning incidents linked to abandoned mining pits.

The milestone achievement was announced in a press release dated December 15, 2025, signed by the Committee’s Secretary, CDCO E. K. Dawood Mensah, who also serves as the Central Regional Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO).

According to the release, the committee was established through a resolution of the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) and officially inaugurated on June 19, 2025, following years of public concern over the dangers posed by uncovered mining pits across parts of the Central Region, particularly in the Upper Denkyira East Municipality.

fd6ebd3c c82c 44a7 8cbd 66ce0367eb79

Successive governments, the statement recalled, had rolled out several anti-galamsey operations over nearly two decades, including Operation Flush-Out (2006), the Inter-Ministerial Task Force (2013), Operation Vanguard (2017), Operation Halt (2024), and NAIMOS (2025). While these operations succeeded in disrupting illegal mining activities, they often failed to address the environmental destruction and safety hazards left behind.

As a result, deep pits filled with water were abandoned, turning farmlands and forest areas into death traps, especially for children, farmers, and unsuspecting residents.

d8f4f4ca 4a77 44f5 b763 6fcf9890754c

Data obtained from the Ghana Police Service (Upper Denkyira East Division) and NADMO Central Region revealed a disturbing trend prior to the committee’s formation. Between February and August 2025, 27 people lost their lives after drowning in abandoned galamsey pits within the area.

Since the launch of the land reclamation exercise, however, no drowning cases have been recorded, a dramatic turnaround that officials describe as proof that the initiative is saving lives.

Beyond preventing deaths, the reclamation exercise has also brought environmental relief to affected communities. Degraded lands have been leveled, dangerous pits filled, and unstable grounds restored, reducing the risk of erosion and water contamination.

337cbf6a c870 4d7e bdc2 c32f898220db

Although the committee faced early challenges such as limited vehicle support and weather-related delays caused by heavy rainfall, the overall impact of the project has been overwhelmingly positive.

The committee credited its progress to strong collaboration among security agencies, local government authorities, traditional leaders, and technical experts, as well as the cooperation of community members who provided local knowledge and support.

This collective effort, the release noted, has helped tackle not only illegal mining activities but also the lingering consequences that enforcement operations often leave behind.

7bc0a94e c9da 4cd8 b812 b71aafc5683b

To protect the gains made so far, the committee has called on REGSEC to put in place robust security measures to prevent illegal miners from reoccupying reclaimed lands. Without such protection, the committee warned, there is a risk that the same areas could once again be destroyed.

The committee further recommended that the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) develop a comprehensive land-use plan to ensure reclaimed lands are put to productive and sustainable use, including agriculture, afforestation, or community development projects.

Officials believe that giving the land a clear purpose will discourage illegal mining and provide alternative livelihoods for residents.

630897a3 efe8 4489 8eea d74f34ad5110

The statement also emphasized the importance of continuous public sensitization and community engagement, noting that the fight against galamsey cannot succeed without the active support of local people.

Residents are being encouraged to report illegal mining activities and resist any attempts to allow miners back onto reclaimed sites.

The Central Regional Land Reclamation Committee reaffirmed its commitment to continuing the exercise, stressing that environmental restoration, public safety, and sustainable land management remain its core priorities.

With consistent support from government institutions and local communities, the committee believes the initiative can serve as a model for other regions grappling with the deadly legacy of illegal mining.

Health authorities in the Ayensuano District of the Eastern Region have confirmed that 30 pregnant women tested positive for HIV during routine antenatal screenings conducted across health facilities in the district.

The development has sparked renewed discussions about sexual health education, early testing, and the fight against mother-to-child transmission of HIV in Ghana.

According to information gathered from district health sources, the cases were recorded between January and October 2025 after a total of 1,571 pregnant women were screened as part of standard antenatal care (ANC) services. This places the HIV positivity rate among pregnant women in the district at approximately 1.9 percent.

Routine Screening, Not a Sudden Outbreak

Health officials have been quick to clarify that the figures do not indicate a sudden HIV outbreak, but rather reflect the effectiveness of routine testing during pregnancy. In Ghana, all pregnant women attending antenatal clinics are encouraged to undergo HIV testing to help protect both mother and child.

Medical experts explain that early detection is one of the most powerful tools in the fight against HIV. Once a pregnant woman tests positive, she is immediately linked to care and placed on antiretroviral therapy (ART), which greatly reduces the amount of virus in her body.

“When HIV is detected early and treatment begins promptly, the chances of transmitting the virus from mother to baby are extremely low,” a health worker familiar with the district’s maternal health programs explained.

Protecting Babies Through PMTCT Programs

The Prevention of Mother-To-Child Transmission (PMTCT) program remains a key pillar of Ghana’s HIV response. Through this program, HIV-positive pregnant women receive free treatment, counseling, and continuous monitoring throughout pregnancy, delivery, and breastfeeding.

Health officials say all 30 women who tested positive have been enrolled in care and are receiving the necessary medical and psychological support to ensure safe pregnancies and healthy deliveries.

Call for Increased Awareness and Responsible Sexual Behaviour

The situation has reignited calls for stronger HIV awareness campaigns, particularly among young people and women of reproductive age. Public health advocates stress the need for:

•Regular HIV testing
•Faithfulness in relationships
•Correct and consistent condom use
•Early antenatal clinic attendance
•Open conversations about sexual health

They also emphasized the importance of reducing stigma and discrimination, which often discourage people from getting tested or seeking treatment.

Community Involvement Is Key

Community leaders, religious institutions, and civil society organizations in Ayensuano have been urged to support health authorities by spreading accurate information about HIV and encouraging residents to take advantage of free testing services.

“Fear and stigma remain major barriers. We need community support to let people understand that HIV is no longer a death sentence and that treatment works,” another health source noted.

Ghana’s Broader HIV Fight Continues

Ghana has made significant progress over the years in reducing HIV-related deaths and new infections, largely due to improved access to testing and treatment. However, health experts warn that complacency could reverse these gains if education and prevention efforts are not sustained.

The Ayensuano District Health Directorate has assured residents that it will continue surveillance, education, and support services to ensure both mothers and babies remain safe.

As authorities intensify public health efforts, residents are encouraged to get tested regularly, practice safe sex, and support those living with HIV rather than stigmatizing them.
