The Black Stars have received a boost ahead of their crucial 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifying Group E game against Angola.
The team’s coach, Chris Hughton, has added defender Nicholas Opoku to his squad following the withdrawal of Salisu Mohammed and Alexander Djiku due to injuries.
Opoku, who currently plays for Amiens, has been drafted in to provide additional options for the coach in defence.
The 25-year-old made his debut for the Black Stars in 2017 and has since played 13 times for the national team, scoring one goal.
However, Opoku’s football career was briefly derailed when he ruptured his cruciate ligaments in 2021, forcing him to sit on the sidelines for almost an entire season. Nevertheless, he has since recovered from the injury and is ready to compete with the team’s only recognized central defenders, Joseph Aidoo and Daniel Amartey, for a starting spot.
The Black Stars will be hoping to secure a win in their upcoming match against Angola, which will be played at the Estádio 11 de Novembro in Luanda. Kickoff is scheduled for 16:00 GMT on Monday, March 27, 2023.
