The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) is set to officially launch the 30th GJA Media Awards on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, in Accra, as the Association marks a major milestone in the history of its prestigious awards scheme.

The launch will take place at the Kempinski Hotel Gold Coast City and is expected to attract senior government officials, diplomats, media professionals, corporate leaders, civil society representatives and other stakeholders.

The Chief of Staff, Hon. Julius Debrah, will serve as the Special Guest of Honour at the ceremony.

Among the prominent personalities expected to attend are the Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Hon. Sam Nartey George; Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Hon. Felix Kwakye Ofosu; Minority Leader Hon. Alexander Afenyo-Markin; and Executive Chairman of KGL Group, Mr. Alex Apau Dadey.

Nine-member committee to oversee awards assessment

One of the major highlights of the launch will be the inauguration of a nine-member GJA Media Awards Committee, which will be responsible for assessing entries and determining winners across the various award categories.

The committee brings together professionals with experience spanning journalism, editing, broadcasting, photojournalism, media management and public service.

It will be chaired by Mr. Kobby Asmah, Commissioner of the National Media Commission (NMC) and former Editor of the Daily Graphic of Graphic Communications Group Limited.

Other members of the committee are Mr. A.C. Ohene, Senior Editor in charge of Special Assignment at Adom FM/TV; Mr. Richard Mensah, Editor at Citi FM/TV; and Madam Ellen Avorgbedor, former Central Regional Director of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC).

The committee also includes Mr. Christian Akorli, former Senior Editor and Head of the Economics and Financial Desk at the Ghana News Agency (GNA); Mr. Nana Kwasi Appiah, Senior Photojournalist at the Information Services Department; and Mrs. Georgina Naa-Maku Quaittoo, Editor of the Spectator at the New Times Corporation.

Rounding out the committee are Mr. Kingsley Nsiah-Poku, former Deputy Managing Director of Atinka Media Village, and Mr. Awudu Mahama, Managing Editor of The Custodian Newspaper.

Assessment to begin immediately

Following their inauguration on Wednesday, October 7, the committee is expected to immediately begin reviewing submissions for the 30th GJA Media Awards.

The assessment process is scheduled to end on October 28, 2026, with the committee expected to submit its final report to the GJA National Executive on October 29.

The Association says the diverse professional backgrounds of the committee members will help ensure a thorough, transparent and credible assessment process.

The GJA believes the experience of the committee will also help protect the credibility and prestige of the awards, which have become an important platform for celebrating excellence in Ghanaian journalism.

GJA highlights importance of quality journalism

The 30th edition of the awards comes at a time when the media continues to play a critical role in informing the public, holding institutions accountable and contributing to national development.

According to the GJA, recognising outstanding journalism is essential to strengthening public confidence in the media and encouraging practitioners to uphold professional and ethical standards.

The Association is therefore calling on corporate Ghana, development partners, media organisations and other stakeholders to support the 30th GJA Media Awards.

Journalists and media practitioners, particularly those who submitted entries for the awards, have also been encouraged to attend the launch and participate in the milestone event.

Beyond the official launch, the ceremony will provide an opportunity for members of the media fraternity and other stakeholders to interact, celebrate journalism and anticipate the main awards ceremony.

Culture and entertainment

The launch will also feature Ghanaian music and entertainment, with performances scheduled from the Kwanpa Band and Seprewaa.

The entertainment component is expected to add a cultural touch to the event while bringing together professionals from different sectors to celebrate Ghana’s media industry.

The main 30th GJA Media Awards ceremony is scheduled for Saturday, November 7, 2026, in Accra.

As the Association prepares for the milestone edition, attention will now turn to the work of the newly inaugurated committee and the journalists whose reporting, investigations, creativity and professional contribution could earn them recognition at this year’s ceremony.
