Ghana has lost former diplomat, politician and public servant Sophia Horner-Sam, who has died at the age of 77.
Her family announced her passing on September 19, 2026, according to reports following a statement shared publicly by former Minister of State Mustapha Abdul-Hamid.
Horner-Sam served Ghana and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in several senior capacities during a long career in public service. Her roles included NPP National Vice Chairperson, Deputy Western Regional Minister, Deputy Minister for Ports, Harbours and Railways, and Ghana’s Ambassador to the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
Sophia Horner-Sam’s public service career
Born in 1949, Horner-Sam became involved in national public affairs through both government and party service.
Within the NPP, she rose to become the party’s Third National Vice Chairperson. She was elected to the position at the party’s national delegates conference in 2010, receiving 1,743 votes.
Her political career also included service as Deputy Western Regional Minister and later as Deputy Minister for Ports, Harbours and Railways.

Ghana’s Ambassador to the Netherlands
Horner-Sam later moved into diplomatic service.
In July 2017, she was appointed by then-President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as Ghana’s Ambassador to the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
