British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced that he will step down as leader of the Labour Party and relinquish his position as prime minister once a successor is elected.
The announcement marks a significant development in British politics, coming less than two years after Starmer led Labour to a decisive victory in the 2024 general election, ending more than a decade of Conservative rule.
Speaking during a public address, Starmer acknowledged growing discussions within the party about its future leadership and his role in leading Labour into the next general election.
“The question my party has been asking is whether I am best placed to lead it into the next general election,” Starmer said. “I have heard the answer to that question and accept that answer with good grace.”
He revealed that he had informed King Charles III of his decision and requested that Labour’s National Executive Committee begin the process of electing a new party leader.
According to Starmer, nominations for the leadership contest will open on July 9, with the selection process expected to be completed before Parliament reconvenes in September.
Despite his decision to step down, Starmer will remain in office until a new leader is chosen, ensuring continuity in government and a smooth transition of power.
“I will do everything I can to ensure a smooth transfer of power,” he stated.
The outgoing prime minister also expressed gratitude to his cabinet colleagues, party members, staff, and supporters for their commitment throughout his tenure. He paid special tribute to his family, saying he now looks forward to spending more time with his wife, Victoria, and their children.
Starmer’s resignation is expected to trigger an intense leadership contest within Labour as senior party figures position themselves to take over the reins of both the party and the government.
Political analysts believe the outcome of the race will play a crucial role in shaping the future direction of the Labour government and the United Kingdom’s political landscape ahead of the next general election.
More details on potential candidates and the leadership timetable are expected in the coming weeks.
