Captaine Smart throws lifeline to Mumford fishers with GH¢39,000 water, ECG payment

Mumford, Central Region – In a significant effort to support lives and livelihoods, Captaine Blessed Godsbrain Smart, an aspiring National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament for the Gomoa West Constituency, has settled accumulated water and electricity bills totaling GH¢39,000-GH¢24,500 for water and GH¢14,500 for electricity-for Mumford Landing Beach.

The payment was intended to restore water and electricity to the only functional largest cold store in the region, giving fishers access to ice for preserving their catch.

Smart made the payments during a community engagement held on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, at Mumford Roman Catholic Primary School.

The issue emerged when Team Captaine Smart visited the community. One fisherman rose to his feet and recounted the challenges they had endured over the years due to non-payment of water and electricity bills.

“We rely on the cold store for the production of ice blocks, which we carry to sea to preserve our catch,” he explained. “The lack of it has impacted negatively on our business,” the fisherman added.

Mumford is a prominent fishing town not only in the Gomoa West District of the Central Region but also across Ghana. Checks indicate that it contributes significantly to the assembly’s revenue generation.

It was ironic and, indeed, unthinkable when it emerged during the engagement that attempts by community elders to find lasting solutions to the problem had proved futile.

“We visited the DCE and MP some time ago for assistance to pay off the debt, but that help never came,” one community elder said.

Extremely astonished by the fishers’ revelations, Captaine Smart, as he is affectionately called, released GH¢39,000 to cover the entire indebtedness to the Ghana Water Company and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG). He expressed shock that a vibrant fishing community like Mumford had been made to endure such an ordeal.

Smart underscored that fish processing relied heavily on constant water supply, warning that a lack of it was a recipe for environmental and health risks for the people.

“I am settling the debt today to revive economic activity in the entire area,” he said.

The enthusiastic gathering thanked Mr Smart in unison for his show of love and support and promised to support his endeavours.
